Probably Buzz Aldrin's favour kick, The NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 x Tom Sachs launched in June 2017 at American Artist Tom Sachs' Space Camp on New York City's Governor's Island. Inspired by Tom Sachs work with NASA scientists the launch was delivered as a ten challenge experience involving both mental and physical challenges, with the participants unlocking through completion of these tasks the opportunity to purchase this much sought after release. This sort of rigorous selectivity is akin to the selection process of astronauts, another telling nod to NASA and the Space Program which has inspired so much of Tom Sachs work. This trainers design consists of an off-white mesh upper with maple coloured nubuck panels, a Sports Red Swoosh, and red pull tabs on the heel and tongue, a colour scheme that wouldn't be seen as out of place on the surface of Mars. While this shoe's exclusivity may suggest to many that this shoe is a collector's item, the message on the box which reads "These shoes are only valid if worn, and worn to death by you. Posers need not apply." implies otherwise. Tom Sachs has intended this pair to be a living art installation, one that should be enjoyed for what they are, trainers to be worn. As functional as it is striking, this collaboration with Nike is an immersive experience heavily interested by the planets above, and the end result is out of this world.
